EMT???

I don't know much about the whole healthcare system but I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that 'doctors' get paid chunks of wealth which is perfectly fine... They deserve it. Well SOME do. Why doesn't EMTs.... Get paid or offered more? They see the patients in the most horrific position. They are the ones who deal with the worst part. They keep them alive to get to the doctor. My hubby went through tech school and earned his EMT license. He had to learn stuff in a short period of time that takes doctors at least a full year to go through. I just don't understand it completely I guess. I'm not complaining... Don't get me wrong. My hubby makes $50 per call when he in on duty. On busy nights he can make a lot. I just don't see EMTs buying summer houses on the beach or taking family on cruises and hanging out in Los cabos or driving an imported expensive car. Just curious... :)

Because doctors have so more education. EMTs are awesome but they can't manage/diagnose disease and prescribe medication. A dr goes to school for eight years then has to do a residency for four years before they see big bucks

A person can become and EMT with a few months of classes and they don't have an "advanced" skill set. Paramedics are more trained and have more skills than EMTs. Neither one of their training is even comparable to a physicians. I'm not sure how or why they would ever be compared. Aside from the ambulance driver, the EMT is the low man, least trained in an EMS department.

Coming from being a EMT-I/ Med tech in the armed forces we have a lot of different skill levels. By no means are we doctors, but you are right about us saving lives while doctors help maintain that life after they are stable. We need the doctors as much as they need us. I have always felt firefighters,EMS& police need a little bump up on $. There education is being in that moment of keeping someones life or having them die in their hands. That should say something for their so called "not educated" status.

Because EMTs work under a physician anyway.
Whenever an EMT brings in a patient to the ER...they are operating under the director of emergency services...a doctor.

Because if they have any questions or need to know what to do for a particular patient...they have to call a doctor at the ER they are going to...or risk losing their cert.

Because they are only certified and not licensed.

Because they have a standard of care they have to follow...put together by a doctor.

Because it only takes about 6-7 months to become an EMT and about 1.5 years to become a paramedic. It takes 8 plus years to become a doctor.

Because...at the end of the day...an EMT's job is to get the patient to the hospital to be treated by a doctor. They don't diagnose...they speculate and treat based on symptoms...they could be completely wrong...a doctor diagnosis' and prescribes.

I was an EMT and then a paramedic for years...

believe me...I wish I made more...but it is what it is.

We really don't save lives every 2 seconds....90% of what we did were the drunk round-up and picking grandma off the floor...or taking the same patient, for the same reason...to the hospital for the millionth time.

Working in EMS means 23 hours of boring and 1 hour of sheer terror....if you have an exciting night.
