Just a curious question?

I don't know of this will start any arguments and it's not my intention. But I'm a cna and I work full time in a nursing home. All of the residents are Caucasian. There is one resident that's African American but the whole facility really is Caucasian. So my question is why do mostly all Caucasian people put there elderly in a home ??? I'm Hispanic and I would work my ass off to keep my mom or dad with me. I understand some people really can't take care of there elderly but maybe it's a cultural thing ? Idk any input ?

Maybe they feel that the quality of care would be better for them.

I had to put my grandma in a home, the only reason she didn't come and live with me was because she has md and is losing her sight so rapidly that she needed a place that was friendly to that, my place has a step in bath, and 5 Steps up to the house.
She also wanted to hold onto as much dependence as she could, it's still a big adjustment, but she is feeling really good living on her own, in an assisted living unit.

Where do you live? I live I the deep south where it is very mixed. You see a very even number of races here in nursing homes. Also, maybe it's the particular home you are working in ?

Here, caucasians and african americans, often feel like they have to resort to nursing homes because most members of the family work so much that no one would be able to properly care for them at home. The working class here is pretty tight money wise and can't afford private home care.

I've been working as a cna for many years and its the same situation where I live; however, I live in a 98% white area (small town in northern Wisconsin).

I don't know how fair it is to generalize it as white people tend to put their family in homes more often. all of the people I have worked with needed to be in assisted living for many different reasons.

as for my grandma who was recently put into assisted living, she refuses to move out of her hometown. she will not move into my mom or my house because she doesn't want to leave Hudson. which is ridiculous, but she has her mind and its her decision.

Alot of the elderly want to be in a nursing home. They don't want to be a burden on the family. I love my grandma to death but I know she would never come live with me no matter how much I beg her. She wants to keep that feeling of being independent towards her family. So its not like every elderly person is in a nursing home because their family put them there. And i think the reason there is more white people is just coincidence. Im sure you could you go to another nursing home and there be more people of every race.

I am an lvn, and us nurses have talked about this often. We have a good mix in our local nursing homes but we notice that our caucasian residents rarely have visitors compared to our residents of other races. If we have a Hispanic resident they are visited daily by multiple family members, same with our portuguese and African American residents but many of our Caucasian residents won't have a visitor for weeks, months or ever. I never understood this cuz I am white myself and will do everything I can to take care of my parents in my home. But if I had to admit them I would be there all the time

I must say that although pretty much evenly mixed around here as far as residents , I have noticed that caucasians don't get as many visitors. I've volunteered in nursing homes since I was teen, and always noticed that.

We worked in several nursing homes in nursing school. I'm from New Orleans and there is a huge minority population. The ones we worked in were predominately white. There was 1 hell hole and it was mostly black. I've also seen that most of the white residents had fewer visitors but paid more money for their care. $5,000+ per month is a huge chunk of change.

i think alot of it is gonna depend on where you live. My family recently put my grandmother in a nursing home but i can honestly say its because they're all very selfish and just dont want to deal with her.

I'm a white girl living in the uk and it's one of the things that I most admire about other cultures, the way they selflessly care for their elderly. We are rubbish at it! We managed to keep my nan in her own home with home carers until she died at 103, but i know we are a minority. I noticed that the best carers she had were those of a different race, particularly two somalian women. When my nan was cantankerous I would apologise, the white women were very short tempered with her but the other cultures always just said 'oh she's old' and continued to be kind to her. I'm a paediatric nurse but I have worked on geriatric wards in the past and have always noticed how (in particular Asian families) look after their own. The non white patients tended to have female relatives who would do all their personal hygiene for them and even bring in meals, where as some of the white patients were lucky to even get a visitor. It was also the same with the Irish travelling communities they would look after their elderly. These races would do whatever they could to keep their relatives out of a care home, I wish the same could be said for my own race!

also with my family, my uncle is her power of attorney and has enough money to hire someone to stay with her but he wont. and his house is huge, he has room and just doesnt want to take her in. My aunt is pretty much the same way. my dad doesn't have room but said he would take her in if needed. before the nursing home, she was living completely alone. she's 85 and has horrible Alzheimer's and its probably a miracle she never got herself killed.

And also what I don't understand it that some of the nursing homes rent a month for each resident is 7000 a month ! Why cant you pay 7000 a month to have a live in caretaker in your HOME one on one ! Boggles my mind
