Almost Scammed

My husband and I are planning to move soon. We have two small boys and can't afford to live in the safest area so we decided to get a guard dog. I want an Akita but he wants a malamute (who make lousy guard dogs BTW).

We've been debating back and forth on which breed to get so imagine our excitement when we found an Akita/Malamute mix on kijiji.

I called the owners and they sent me pics of the mom, dad, and a pup from the last litter.

While locking down a ride to get the pup I googled the mix. And surprise surprise... The exact same pic, of the exact same dog from the 'previous litter' is on a rescue site and is 7 years old!!

I messaged them and sent them the link, they haven't responded in over 24 hrs.

My heart is broken, I am pissed, and embarrassed. Wtf is that bull s*** ?

that's the sucks!!

but look into Getting a Dogue De Boudreaux, I can promise you NO ONE will attempt to get into your yard, I have a 18 month female, she is 60 kilos so 120 pounds, and her bark... omg, she sounds like she will rip someone's throat apart... But, the best part.. is she's the biggest softy, as 98% of Dogues are... and are incredible with children.

I'm sorry. What's kijiji? is that a rescue site? Have you looked at breed specific rescue sites? You can usually find something, I think through petfinder.

We had a bullmastiff once, she was really dumb. Really really dumb, so I don't want to go the mastiff route again. But thank you for the suggestion! :D

Kijiji is like Craigslist.

The thing with Akitas is that you have establish the pack order from when they're very young, as they are super dominant. so a rescue would mean a much harder dog to train, and with the 2 small boys, is not an option at this time.

You can get puppies via rescue. My mom almost just got an 8 week old chihuahua. It's more common than people think. I just looked and they had over 30 akita puppies, it's a nation wide rescue search. Either way, good luck.

Where is this site? I live in Canada and I'm not flying a puppy across the boarder, or anywhere for that matter. It has to be within driving distance. I've already almost been scammed once, it ain't gonna happen again.

I got a husky for a guard dog. Nothing comes into her yard without us knowing. We wanted an alaskan klika (not sure how its spelled) or malamute, but got an all white siberian husky purebred AKC registered off of puppyfind.com. Shes worth well over $1000 and got her for less than $400.

We have a Cane Corso and everyone is terrified of it.
In reality it is the sweetest dog ever and loves our daughter like one of its own.
We will never own a different breed and are looking into getting another one.

douge. de boudreaux and the cane cane corsos seem like the best looking guard dogs. my bf bought a pit to be a guard dog....she isn't a good guard dog. she does bark at every noise noons would get near the house without me knowing and she does look scary but unless I am scared then she isn't as protective. she just kisses eeryone

We can't get a pit or a rottie, the insurance company won't give us home insurance. So those are out.

I love rotties so much.

My husband has finally come around to the Akita, now we just need to find one.... That's real!

When you say guard dog do you mean a dog that will bark and alert you or a dog that would bark and then actually bite someone?

If you want a bark and alert dog either of your breeds will do. Just remember a husky is a sled dog and an akita is a dog fighting dog.

If you want a dog that will actually attack someone to protect your home and family I suggest you nix both of those breeds and contact a professional who can get you something reliable.

There are very few dogs today that will actually, in defense of their home or family attack someone. Relying on a dog for safety is not a good idea unless the dog has been thouroughly tested.

I know a good number of people will say "oh my fido would protect me" I tell these people that they should have a bitework decoy break into their home. Or grab them physically in public. Fido usually pisses on the floor and hides. I have been doing this sort of work for 20 years and it breaks my heart to see people rely on dogs and then get hurt because they thought they were safe.

Sorry this is so long or if it is off topic it just happens to be an area I deal with a lot and I try to help if I can.

We have a Shephard/Domerman mix. He is awesome. He barks if someone is at the door or near the yard. He's very protective of kids. Watched him a few months ago, daycare was going past the house, on the bike path, and one little kid wasn't walking so one of the adults picked up the kid and my dog went nuts. He is a sweetie at home. Keeps our 2 yo away from the lawn mower if we are all in the yard and dh is mowing, if another dog is near dd, pooch is right there growling ready to attack.
