tips

Just thought it would be a good idea to share some tips for first time mums.

My number one tip is to store your stocked packets of wipes upside down so all the moisture goes to the top of the pack. when you come to use them the wipes you take first wont be dry.

Don't buy lots of first size nappies, look at the different weight size and get a good selection of sizes.

Do not buy the small bottles if bottle feeding (or just buy one) they start using the big ones very quickly, I bought 6 small and 6 big last time and won't be making that mistake again!!

I love the mini fridge idea! Never used muslin squares last time though. Didn't know what to use them for ha. I'd say the best tip I can give if u do bottle feed is to use the dr brown bottles with the anti collic tube in. Best invention ever and save lots of upset an uncomfortable babies. They hardly get any wind with them. If they do colief is also great to use if u can't get wind up x

Don't buy loads of baby shampoo and baby lotion, you literally need a tiny drop of shampoo it will last you forever!!

Use olive oil on newborn skin, not baby lotion as it brings them out in a rash.

Buy loads of bibs, then some more and then some!! You can never have to many!

If your bottle feeding buy the wide neck bottles. Me and hubby wasted lots of formula trying to get the powder in the small neck bottles.

It's very true about the baby shampoo. My son is one now and I've only just bought my second bottle of shampoo, lol.

As for shampoo, if your baby has cradle cap, when bathing your baby rub a little bit of baby oil into their hair, rinse and then use shampoo and the cradle cap will be gone in a couple of washes.

Save receipts and dont take tags/open boxes until you know its the right size. Shops understand if you need to make a swap

If you have a boy make sure his winky is pointing down when you put the nappy on.

If you FF the ready made cartons are invaluable for 2am feeds.

For Calpol etc use a syringe thing rather than a spoon. Much less chance of spillage.

Agree with the muslin squares- I have had to buy more due to all the poo that ended up on them.

Babygros that do up down the front are a lot easier for newborns- quite a few go over the head etc and they're more difficult to deal with.

Mothercare sizes run quite big and Next are smaller.

Buy short sleeved vests etc from Asda, Tesco, Sainbury's or Primark. So much cheaper and when you end up with poo everywhere you can cut it off and not worry about the costs.

Babies will drink milk at any temperature.

Get the sleepsuits with built in mits!!!

Don't go overboard buying newborn clothes!! (I made that mistake and she didn't even wear half the stuff)

Build up your arms muscles now!!

If you're breastfeeding, stock up on lots of breastpads!! Ella is 4 months and I must have used over a thousand!! (tommee tippee are the best)

If baby gets stuffy and is snuffly at night, nasosal saline drops are the best I've found and hang a wet towel over a warm radiator to release moisture into the air.

For formula fed babies ... When putting water in your sterilised bottles to store in the fridge for feed later dont put in the full amount. E.g if your making a 5oz bottle only put 3 oz in then pop in the fridge. When making the feed later top up to 5oz with boiling water ... No need to heat!!!

Just adjust for differant quantities!

Don't get to hung up on the rules, we FF our first we made the bottles up before hand and kept in fridge (not in door) then we heated I microwave! Trust your own common sense! Hotspots- shake well and test, don't let people insult your intelligence!
On that note if you think something is wrong it prob is.

Babies with colds put a few drops of olbas or similar on muslin and tie round cot bars or put on radiator or drape over top, prop cot up on books to tilt to help babies breathe.

Disposable changing mats are great use for you after birth, sitting on etc and for bubs, you will rarely have to get a new one out!

Cheapest baby grows possible then you feel less bad when there covered in poo and you think sod it and chuck em in the bin!
At some point your baby will scream the house down and you will try everything and they will still cry... You are not a bad mum!

If it's your first child then nap while they do! Don't be tempted to "have a quick tidy / do a load of washing" while your bubs sleeps, take a nap!!!
