Is it safe to give premature babies gripe water/colic calm?

i think my 3 week old is gassy and fussy at night. He makes a lot of grunting noises and is constantly pulling legs up to chest.

Don't know if you can give them it, but the grunting is very normal and common among preemies.

My little girl grunts all the time too! She was 5 weeks early and it seems she does it worse at night also. Someone told
Me that they will stop doing it as much at 4-5 months, Idk how true that is but I hope it is soon!!!

I also asked my dr about gripe water for the hiccups but she didn't suggest it, she said really just use mylicon.

We've used mylicon and gripe water. He responds best to gripe water. Our son is 8.5 weeks.

My son is also a preemie baby he was born 6/22 @ 31 weeks my due date was 8/20. My son use to grunt so bad it use to drive me crazy. He's now 11 weeks & he just stopped grunting & straining. This is something that preemies do his Dr said he would stop by 4 months but thank god he stopped now. I changed his bottles to Dr.Brown and OMG that made a huge difference & I also gave him gripe water. I hope this helps. Be patient it will go away..

Thanks everyone! I kind of new the grunting was common but My ds has been miserable and crying all the time and I had a feeling something wasnt right. He also had episodes of choking on spit up to the point where he was struggling to breathe. I finally took him to the doctor just to try and find out why he was so uncomfortable. So, we found out he is suffering from reflux. Elevated his mattress and giving zantac and it seems to be working. Hes been sleeping a lot better! still grunts and makes all kinds of crazy noises though lol.

my little girl had reflux when she was born too. her doc said to put cereal in her bottle to thicken it up, or you can buy the formula with added rice (i think I tried Enfamil AR) but it was much cheaper to buy regular formula and add about 1 scoop of rice to every 2 scoops of formula.

My girl grunts too! She also has reflux. My Dr gave her medicine to give twice a day 30mins before feeding. She chokes on it and scares me. I wake up every hr checking on her.

I am so glad that I came across this thread! I thought my daughter just had an attitude problem bc she grunts all the time! I thought it was just bc she wasn't comfortable or she wanted me to pick her up lol. And as far as gas...she handles her formula well, but her tummy rumbles and she has horrible gas. My dr said I could give the gas drops but only when necessary. Hmmm...and here I was accusing her of an attitude problem at 3 weeks old lol...poor baby!

So...question...when they are grunting like that, is it bc they are in pain?
