I have to admit I got a little teary-eyed watching his interview today.... Ok I cried actual tears of happiness. I'm so glad that he finally affirmed his support for full marriage equality.
The topic of gay marriage has been highly politicized lately and I have been made to feel like a second class citizen by zealot right-wing conservatives. It's weird, the LGBTQ Community is talked about like we're this "thing" that needs to be stopped before we destroy the country.
what is there to stop?
We are people. Many of us are American just like many of our heterosexual counterparts. We just want to respectfully live our lives.
YES, we are asking for equality. YES, We are asking for our government to recognize the relationships that many of is already have. We are not this "thing" that needs to be stopped. We will not destroy the country. In fact, the day that marriage equality is granted nationwide, will be a day that this country adheres more closely to the principle that all men are created equal.
We are trying to be included in the concept of "family" or "marriage." Many of us value family and marriage just as much as our straight counterparts. We are trying to be allowed to live the principles we believe.
Sorry for the going off on a tangent.
Anyway, there's something about seeing the most powerful man in the country (and arguably the world) openly say he acknowledge my humanity that makes me cry with happiness.
